Here is an old cottage in a conservation area. Due to the poor condition of the cellar, the cellar space was unusable. The floors were just uneven compacted earth. The walls were damp, salty and the masonry was slowly crumbling and decaying.
As part of a whole-house renovation, the owners wanted to improve the condition of the cellar, the make it dry, stop the decay and to make it suitable for storing miscellaneous things.
Most of the time the presence of salts is a more serious problem to old masonries than water. The thermal insulation of this 16th century timber-frame farm house has been completed with breathable thermal insulation materials. The RasoThermo Heres superinsulating thermal lime plaster has been used for the solid parts of the masonry, resulting in high-performance low-thinkness thermal insulation, retaining the historic character of the building while saving internal space.
Here is an 18 metre tall 200 year-old listed wind mill, not very far from the sea. Wind driven rain created major problems, resulting in ongoing water leaks. The building has been sympathetically waterproofed and thermally insulated with lime plasters only, using breathable heritage-friendly materials only.
Here is an alternative restoration option to facades damaged by dampness, salts and acid rain. The damaged bricks or stones can be the repaired or rebuilt with Roman lime plasters.
