As part of our regular ongoing training, Core Conservation attended a lime plastering workshop at MGN Italy.

The workshop was conducted by Mr. Naldo Busato, a Master Restoration Craftsman from Venice, who demonstrated us step by step the hands-on construction process of traditional Venetian Pastellone and Terrazzo lime-cocciopesto floors.

Cocciopesto is a traditional building material that has been employed since Roman times, rooted deeply in the historic craft of Venetian architecture. It employs a unique mixture, primarily composed of lime and ceramic fragments, which is expertly applied to create stunning and durable finishes known as Venetian Pastellone and Terrazzo floors. These floors are not only celebrated for their aesthetic appeal but also for their exceptional durability and sustainability. The use of cocciopesto in the crafting of these floors dates back centuries and is revered for its long-lasting qualities and environmentally friendly properties.

The lime-cocciopesto mixture results in a resilient surface that is resistant to wear and weather, making it an ideal choice for both historical restorations and modern applications. Cocciopesto floors bring several benefits, including natural humidity regulation and an elegantly polished finish that enhances any interior space. This ancient technique has stood the test of time, merging traditional craftsmanship with innovative design, and continues to inspire architects and designers around the world. The timeless elegance and sustainable nature of cocciopesto flooring indeed make it an invaluable element of Venetian cultural heritage.

On the final day of the training, a team of British architects visited MGN, where they were given a guided tour of the showroom and introduced to the company’s comprehensive range of lime-based products. The visit offered valuable insights into MGN’s expertise in areas such as natural waterproofing solutions, structural consolidation techniques, traditional lime flooring solutions and the application of cocciopesto in heritage restoration.
