Ultra-High Quality Venetian "Marble" Finish

Marmorino MGN - Description

Marmorino Venziano is created from pure slaked lime mixed together with tiny marble particles – hence its name which literally means “little marble” in Italian.

This classic 15th century finishing plaster developed in renaissance Venice, perhaps as a substitute for marble, is one of the most elegant, high-end and widely known finishes, requested by architects and designers worldwide. It is perhaps the most popular plaster finish in Italy today.

Marmorino finishes are not only about top-quality materials but also about workmanship. By applying pressure and compacting the material, the finish becomes compact, hard-wearing and glass-like shiny, while retaining its breathability. With the optional application of soap and wax mixes, the lime surface gains a unique patina, becoming waterproof in just a few millimetres. The methodology can be applied not only to walls, but to floors too, resulting in ultra-smooth, hard-wearing lime floors, also known as Venetian Pastellone floors.

MARMORINO MGN is a lime mortar produced from long-seasoned lime putty from the pit, fine-grained micronized marble powders, resulting in a high quality, smooth Venetian Marmorino finish that perfectly reproduces the historical original. The colouring is stable in time and weatherproof as it is made with the exclusive use of natural coloured earths and marble powder, therefore it is not subject to the classic phenomenon of discolouration or fading.

The historic original Marmorino was manufactured from seasoned lime putty, hence it was white, but it could be coloured, if needed, with coloured earths. Marmorino (marble looking) finishes can also be created from the Intonachino Arenino MGN high-quality lime finish, which comes in 24 colours including white.

This product is available in 24 colours - 12 pastel colours (options 01-12) and 12 mediterranean colours (options 101-112), including white (option 01).

Application

Here are some key technical points about how to apply this material correctly:

Finishing

  • Multiple thin coats: the Marmorino finish is applied in several thin coats, which can be 3 or more coats.
  • Let it dry a bit: after the application of each thin coat let the plaster dry a bit (about 30-60 min, depending on ambient conditions), until it somewhat hardens (becomes semi dry) but it still remains workable.
  • Work it well: a key ingredient of a traditional looking marble-like Marmorino lime finish is good, thorough workmanship. Using a small metal hand trowel, work through the semi-dry surface in sections, applying pressure, compacting the material really well throughout the whole surface. The applied pressure pushes the sand and marble granules under the surface, resulting in a compact, hard, glossy but extremely vapour-permeable finish that can shed off liquid water easily.
  • Soap and oil: compacting the material using pressure will make the surface largely waterproof. However, the waterproofing ability can be improved by rubbing into the surface a mix of traditional soaps and oils, completing the traditional application process.
  • Application conditions: ambient and wall temperatures must be between +5 to +30°C during application. Surfaces should be protected from rain and humidity until they have completely dried (approx. 3 – 10 days depending on weather conditions).
  • IMPORTANT: Please watch the plaster application video below before applying the material. Unmute the video if it plays without sound.
